Animated versions of ShiPainter, ShiPainter Pro and OekakiBBS are known to work correctly under these new restrictions. Normal, Paletted and Animated PaintBBS and ChibiPaint do not work at all at this time. I'm still investigating into this issue and I'll post a update as time warrants.

In the meantime, if you wish to use the oekaki without any of these new restrictions, there are older versions of Java (Java 8 Update 11 and below) that will work with this oekaki board without problems.

 I've decided to take a break from my usual style of anime, and since Nomee, amai, and several others seem to have a great talent for realism, I decided to try it to out. Only one problem...
I can't do eyes/eyebrows. Can any kind soul out there give me some... "pointers"?
C+C are also appreciated. Thankies!

edit: Okay umm... while Nomee's advice was helpful, it seems it might take a while before I produce something that looks.... human. so please, everyone, try not to hold yor breath....

edit: okay, this is turning out prety good. Thanks Nomme + amai! However, since I'm basically using Nome''s picture as a guide for the colouring, I don't feel as though I've done this entire thing myself. So be prepared to see more "attempted-realism" pictures in the near/distant future.

me? good at realism? * blinks* . I'm not sure i agree, but thanks!

Anyhow, with eyes + eyebrows, the main things are:

1) draw guidelines roughly half way up the face for the eyes + slightly higher for the eyebrows( this differs depending on age, gender, individual quirks)

2) remember eyes are spherical ( refer to your previous ball drawing)

If you're lost, the best thing would probably be to download + read the Loomis .pdf files ( part. " Drawing the head and hands" , "Figure drawing for the artist' and " Fun with a Pencil"). Since you're at the earlier stages of your artistic development, i'd recommend the unfortunately titled " Fun with a Pencil" first, since it outlines construction fairly well. You don't want to become so overly dependent on construction that you avoid drawing from life , but knowing the basics makes any type of drawing ( inc realism) a lot easier.

My eyes are far from perfect and, because i've been drawing a lot of manga style images ( and flattened eyes are a stylistic feature) , they're a bit too flat. However, since I'm heavily into construction + working out underdrawing, if you watch any animations of my work + pause the first four or five times my pen changes colour, you'll see what i do.

Honestly the best kind of remedy for drawing eyes is looking at people's eyes. I'll lay out a guideline when I first start a face, but everyone is different and some people's eyes are closer together and what not... So my face ends up completely different from how I started. If you're making up a person from your head, it's still good to look for references to see how eyes work.

That being said, I can't wait to see how this turns out! Keep trying at it, you have a lot of potential!! And I hate drawing noses, too. They are my enemy.

they give me nightmares, because i've had to shade so many of them. Eggs ( and bowls of fruit) are the universal artist's torture.

:) you did a good job on this anyhow, though, and it's great to see you practising the basics - people who return to the basics are the ones who will see the most improvement :)

practise may be a shameful or shameless activity, but either way, performing it shamelessly is the most fun.Although, foregrounding the issue of shamelessness suggests the element of some amount of shame? :) Whatever, it's too late and my head hurts from trying to thing.

anyhow, that's an awesome costume design, man! I'm loving the goggles!

just a safety save because my computer seems to be on the fritz . Also, i want some vittals before i start painting

Update - i'm trying to paint this oil-style but keep failing miserably . SO, I'll keep practising, hunt down some step by steps and high quality oekakis + try to figure out how to do this properly. If i haven't got it by Sunday night, i'll just clean up the line art and cel-shade so as to prevent spammage :)



update - the applet keeps crashing so , even though it isn't finished, it's probably as close as it'll ever get.

this type of painting is a real struggle for me . :( It took forever + the painting ruined the (already crappy) lineart. Also , wierdly enough, ended up as fanart for a kid's book i haven't read since i was a kid ( a grown up Aravis from "The Horse and His Boy" ) . Maybe i'm screen - drunk from staring at the monitor so long. * falls asleep intoxicated at keyboard*

well, it's great that you persevered, even wtih the lag- she's really cute.

Maybe it's a coincidence, but I tried to do a picture in shi pro last night and the applet was messing me around like crazy. It's usually pretty good, though. Did you have a lot of other programmes running in the background or select pen pressure? That (along with too high resolution) are the main causes of lag.

anyhow, you're new here, aren't you? welcome to the board , i hope you fix the problem with lag + stay a while :)
