IMPORTANT NOTICE: If you have installed Java 8 Update 20 or later, this update has has blocked access to unsigned applets, making the oekaki boards and other unsigned Java applets inoperable. If you use Java 8 Update 20 or later and if you want to draw on this oekaki, please do the following:

1. Go to Control Panel, select Java and make sure Java content is enabled in your browser.
2. Go to Security and add the URL link of this site in the address bar to your Exception List.

Animated versions of ShiPainter, ShiPainter Pro and OekakiBBS are known to work correctly under these new restrictions. Normal, Paletted and Animated PaintBBS and ChibiPaint do not work at all at this time. I'm still investigating into this issue and I'll post a update as time warrants.

In the meantime, if you wish to use the oekaki without any of these new restrictions, there are older versions of Java (Java 8 Update 11 and below) that will work with this oekaki board without problems.

 First completed drawing in almost two years. This is a Secret Santa drawing of xXIsolation-TheoryXx's Karen and Chiku for CloudyyDaze.

I've decided to uploaded it here at this oekaki, since I can't use Java to draw much anymore.

I hope everyone likes it.

 This looks amazing!!
I'm am a fan of such detailed hair, and you give it a lovely depth.
Cuteness is all over the piece, but not in a "in your face" form - so you can actually taste all the other intricate flavors present in this drawing
The background is smooth, the sky having more than one layer of color grants it a nice soft depth; and the clouds are luminous in a thoughtful way - which grants them fluffiness without going overboard

 Thank you so much. I got around finishing this drawing for the first time in almost three years.

Other than that, I thought hat I wasn't capable of finishing a drawing that I promised to do.

 My itsy bitsy little char, is on-stage: no longer behind the curtains, but in front - and she is curious and perfectly calm.
Lil me, having a quick test after a years - had a few problem loading the java.. xD not anymore apparently!
Done on laptop: AKA (learn from my mistakes, PLEASE..) the colors aren't right. Why? Because I'm silly enough to lay down coloring this, with my >screen tilted a bit, to INCREASE CONTRAST<----- don't do that.
When I finished, I sited down, and went OoO'''''' ~(why are the colors softer?)
So, laptop users, ..I dunno, just be careful x'D this darn thing ain't certain, we never know how the contrast will actually appear.. a grade too behind it seems lighter, a grade too low it seems darker, ah go figure!!
This is actually my first on a laptop, a couple surprises are due x)

It is indeed very sloppy, compared to my other oekakis - but it was nice to get rid of some cobwebs, and I felt silly remembering where things were bit by bit, some by the end of painting it.. xD

 The oekaki is partially working.

If you really want to draw on my oekaki under Java 8 Update 20 or higher, you have to do the following:

1. Go to Control Panel, select Java and make sure Java content is enabled in your browser.
2. Go to Security and add http://ppgrainbow.ninechime.com to your Exception List.

I am able to do minimal testing of oekaki drawings under ShiPainter for the moment. I will do further testing of other oekaki applets to see it's working correctly or not.

 The follow applets work right now:

1. OekakiBBS
2. OekakiBBS (animated)
3. ShiPainter
4. ShiPainter (animated)
5. ShiPainter Pro
6. ShiPainter Pro (animated)

The following applets are not working at all:

1. Normal and Paletted PaintBBS
2. Paint PaintBBS
3. ChibiPaint

Any attempt to save images using PaintBBS or ChibiPaint throws this error message:

Error while sending the oekaki...access denied ("java.net.SocketPermission" "198.57.149.32:80" "connect,resolve")

I'm gonna try to get a hold of Wac to see if there is a way to get around the access denied error.

I'm really having no luck with this stuff. The more I read about Oracle's motivation behind this move, the less I like it, and it makes sense that so few things actually make sense. After trying all weekend, I still can't run applets on my development system for testing. I can't seem to add a file URL to the exception list... only a network URL.

The exception list seems to be the only thing that works, but I can't understand why ChibiPaint can't send a picture, while ShiPainter can (even if it's really, really slow at doing it). ChibiPaint sends data "correctly" while PaintBBS and ShiPainter send data in the same way and in a really old-fashioned format. I'm still working on trying to fix the SocketPermission error, but I don't have high hopes, since it likely requires people to manually edit their policy file, which is just too complicated.

I've wasted all weekend sorting through Java documentation and forums and I'm just really deflated over all of this. I may go through the trouble of buying a security certificate for NineChime so things will work fine on our end, but I think oekaki as a whole is nearing the end of its rope.

 I understand the frustration here, Wac. I'm pretty amazed that OekakiBBS still functions with this site being added to the Exception List.

I was lucky to gain access to the Java applet for my oekaki by adding the HTTP site to the exception list. The Exception List does work and works "as-is" but don't expect Java to work forever.

The biggest reason why oekakies could be the end of its rope in the future is that browsers such as Firefox and Opera may follow Google Chrome's route and permanently drop Java support.

Buying a security certificate for NineChime is the only option available as far as I know.

 If you are visiting my oekaki site at the moment, I'm just curious to ask?

Is Java working correctly on this oekaki board? If you have updated to Java 8 Update 20 on your computer, the update killed access to the Java applet that causes the oekaki to function. If you attempt to use the oekaki, you will get a dialog that reads:

"Application Blocked by Java Security: For security, applications must now meet the requirements for the High or Very High security settings, or be part of the Exception Site List, to be allowed to run. More Information.

The message states that the security settings have blocked an untrusted application from running. I will contact Wac and the MSFN forums to see if there is a workaround to correct this.

I'm still running Java 7, so I haven't noticed this problem. I guess it's time for me to try out Java 8.

Alas, Oracle has been telling people for some time that Java would eventually blacklist "unsigned" applets, and it looks like this is what's happening. I don't think there's a workaround, since this is a policy issue, not a technical problem.

Signing an applet requires site owners to buy security certificates from 3rd party companies, and you have to sign the applet yourself with Oracle's tools, which is not a straightforward process. Not to mention the fact that signing really achieves nothing from a security standpoint. It's just bureaucratic BS. I'm not happy about this.

 I'm not too happy about it either.

While users can use older versions of Java to draw on oekakies, it is pretty much being deprecated. Google already made plans to drop Java support completely and other browsers may follow in the near future.

I'm currently running Windows 95 under VMware with 64 MB of system memory. I have Firefox 1.5 with Java 1.4.0.4 installed. I have no problems with the applet at all.

While Oracle's policy has not made us happy, I'm looking for workarounds on how to get around the hard blocking issue.
